Boy, the Times is really on the ball. George Vecsey, the distinguished chief hatchet man in their jihad against the Jets Stadium, obviously reads this website, because he responded almost instantly to my question: Don't these sports guys on his newspaper actually want a great football park on the river in midtown Manhattan ? The answer is “NO!” Vecsey comes right out and says it.
Vecsey, the voice of sports for the Times, made it clear on April 22 that he doesn't want the Olympics for New York , he doesn't want the stadium, he doesn't want the Jets in Manhattan . A dream that a million Jet fans cherish is to Mr. Vecsey a nightmare.
Let's see what he wrote. He uses such derisive terms as “plopping” and “plunking” it down on the West Side to describe the building of their 75,000-seat stadium, leaving little doubt as to his anti-Jets leanings.
We're just football fans with a lot of 10-year-old boy in us who wish he and his cronies wouldn't feel compelled to be so sour. We want the Promised Land for our team, which has been wandering in the wilderness for lo these many years.
Actually the principal target of Vecsey's assault in this column was the 2012 Olympics, and while we'd like to see the Games right here in town instead of in some remote corner of the world like the last World Cup, for which you had to get up at 2:30 in the morning, that's a separate story. We're for the Games because they in combination with the ultra-modern stadium the Jets would provide for them add up to a formidable tandem.
Are we tilting at windmills? Perhaps, but we prefer to consider the opposition to be the ones who are aping the poor mad man of La Mancha in their repeated furious attacks on a temple of sport whose coming is inevitable and which will be New York's 21st-Century football counterpart of baseball's Yankee Stadium.
