Our Wise Old Egg is one tough customer. He certainly keeps us on our toes. In a recent headline, we ms-spelled George Vecsey's last name, an error made all the more egregious by the fact the Wise Old Egg (WOE!) had spelled Vecsey's name for us several times in the ensuing story. It is with much relief that we noted today that WOE has turned his wrath back on the New York Times, where it belongs. After all, they are actually getting paid for what appears on their pages, unlike us, mere mortals we, which makes their follies all the more delicious.

Times Shoots Puck Through Hoop for Touchdown

And while we're being cruel to the dear old Times, their sports pages provide us with yet another opportunity to deride them.

On April 20, their copy desk doesn't notice a real jaw-dropper, much more glaring than the one previously cited here about “walking a tightrope” between alternatives, when the expression the writer was looking for was “walking a fine line.”

We were nit-picking there, just to shake up some of their complacency, but this one is no nit.

In a list of the leading defensive players in the NBA, the Times included “Kenyon Martin of the Devils.”

So now we know how Martin blocks all those shots. He knocks them away with his hockey stick.
