July 9, 2005 -- The cost of New York's failed bid for the 2012 Olympics was $50 million, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday — emphasizing that every penny was raised privately. But that's still 40 percent more than the $35 million figure used by Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff in Singapore last week. Jordan Barowitz, a spokesman for the mayor, said both numbers are correct. "The international phase was $35 million; $15 million is the U.S. phase. So when Dan said $35 million, he was just talking about since New York was chosen [as the U.S. entry]. The mayor grouped the whole thing together," he said. NYC2012, the nonprofit formed to woo the Games, raised the $50 million from scores of businesses and individuals here.
